This study shows how the intertwining between communication and the world of work contributes to the formation of the identity of independent chargers who work at CEAGESP’s São Paulo Terminal Warehouse. In Latin America’s largest supply center for fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish and miscellaneous (garlic, potatoes, onions, dried coconut and eggs), these professionals make interpersonal relationships, which they establish with permit holders and buyers, the differential for get service every day. The eminently masculine, arduous and demanding activity is reminiscent of the medieval workmanship, surviving in the 21st century in the midst of a precarious situation of labor. With their wooden carts full of various types of goods, they have a very heavy and exhausting workday. From an exploratory research, based on general and specific field observation, photographic records and in-depth interviews, we analyzed the execution of this task in two different commercial environments: the Flower Fair and the Fishyard. From the ergological perspective, we could see the existence of a specific knowledge to transport the products in each of these places, spreading with the discovery of the unpublished character of the work. The perception of language activity comes to light when we evaluate the discourses of chargers, which reveal not only the difficulties but the unhealthy working conditions. In fact, the independent situation of the profession makes the permit holders and CEAGESP itself the beneficiaries of this added value. Far from being entrepreneurs, these workers find themselves practically alone in their craft, since even the union of the category suffers the consequences of being part of a system in which everything seems to converge to not work out. Even so, activity persists, due solely to the determination and political and social strength (not yet properly recognized) of chargers, and is of utmost importance within the entire supply chain.
